Rex Ryan is staying in New York, and the AFC East, as the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills. After the unofficial announcement Sunday morning, reports began to surface that Rex’s landing in Buffalo was moreso the fault of another NFL team.
(The following is a conversation between Fresh Take Sports founder, Mykhal Glass, and the Editor-in-Chief.)
Glass: Falcons dragged their feet.
Editor: Well, our last head coaching hire was the Defensive Coordinator of the most scored on team in football so of course they blew off the good choice. The Falcons are a team that’s OK being in the middle. If they windup having a great year, then cool. If they go 8-8 and miss the playoffs, then “Aw well. We’ll get ’em next year.” When there’s a bad year, they blow smoke about tightening up and doing better.
Glass: Silver lining?
Editor: We’ll eventually make the playoffs again but barring a huge screw up by the other teams we won’t get but so far.
Editor: So the looking at the Bills after their relative success last season. They have a pretty decent defense. If they upgrade their QB or maybe just their receivers, does Rex make them a threat?
Glass: Cutler to Buffalo? Land of misfit toys? Let Rex run the D and hire an OC who won’t have a “system” but will let Cutler do what he wants.
Editor: I still think Rex could win with Cutler. All he needs is a good O-line and a strong lack of media attention. The land of misfit toys mentality works.
Glass: Give Jay the ’08 Falcons offense. Run, run, run, play action pass. Which OC would you choose?
Editor: Anyone who can put points on the board with what they have. The defense will be the story of this team.
Glass: CJ Spiller and Sammy Watkins should equal 21 points a game easy, right?
Editor: You mean CJ Spiller-when-he’s-healthy? And Sammy Watkins isn’t a #1 WR yet.
Glass: I think he is. He had 65 catches and 1000 yards with EJ Manuel and Kyle Orton. Pretty good for a rookie.
Editor: I guess we’ll see since their aren’t many big name receivers in this free agent pool but I’d definitely get some reinforcements.
Glass: I’d go after Dwayne Bowe. He’ll be cheap and there is no way he went from Pro Bowler to nothing in two years. He needs to get away from Alex Smith.
Editor: Dwayne Bowe was suspect before Alex Smith got there.
Glass: At 26, he had 1100 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s 30 now.
Editor: Alex Smith wasn’t there all four of those years since then was my point. Dwayne Bowe could be a great pickup for the Bills though. Cutler likes the deep ball and Bowe made a career off of catching the deep ball.
Glass: Yeah, I don’t think he’s that guy anymore but he could be a pretty good #2 or #3 WR.
