The NBA Allstar Weekend is set for February the 13th-15th. As we all are aware the dunk contest has struggled in recent years to fully live up to the hype it once had 10 to 20 years ago. Part of the reason being that over time their are so many dunks we can possible see. For me execution, showmanship, and just plain knowing you are a rudeboy are intangibles that can’t be measured. Something about a dunk just uplifts the soul of the players, fans, and on-lookers watching on a tube. I’ve come to realize that some guys are great in game dunkers but put under the glitz and glamour of a dunk contest they cower profusely. Harrison Barnes, J.R. Smith, Demarcus Cousins, Jeff Green, Kevin Durant and Dwayne Wade are perfect examples of in game dunkers. Put in a slam dunk contest they would fail to ignite the flame in the arena. In a normal NBA game however the kids got the juice!
To me if I was able to choose the dunkers for the dunk contest in Madison Square Garden which is the ideal stage for an event of this magnitude. I would have to go with a field of 8 and in the 1st round you would get two dunks with a replacement dunk allocated for each round.. Their would be zero restrictions as to props or if you can use a teammate or not. I’ll have past winners judge the contest and the final round will feature an extra dunk so we can establish a true dunk champion like the days of Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins. After much deliberation the dream contest would feature Lebron James, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook, Damian Lillard, KJ McDaniels, Zach Lavine, Gerald Green, and DeAndre Jordan. Hopefully the NBA can adopt something soon to get a lineup like this poppin’.
As it stands now the dunkers have been announced for the 2015 Dunk Contest and 1 out of 8 isn’t bad. The contestants barring injury will be Zach Lavine, Mason Plumlee, Victor Oladipo, and the Greek Freak Giannis Antetokounmpo. I’m not pleased but I’m not displeased either. I figure they can mess around and put on a grand spectacle or it could be a I rather be watching Dawson’s Creek scenario. Big ups to James Van Der Beek he is quite underrated as an actor I must say. One thing is for certain these young lads can most definitely rise up with the best of them. So hopefully they won’t disappoint. I’m going out on a limb to say Zach Lavine will crush the field reminiscent to the way the dunkmaster himself Vince Carter did in Cleveland. -BoSo
